This year, and every year, we are choosing to invest in our planet.

When Earth Day began in 1970, our world was in a much different place. We were largely oblivious to the impact humanity was having on the planet and its consequences, we were powered by coal, and industry was churning out masses of pollution – the sign of profitability, growth, and prosperity.

In 2022, our definition of growth and profitability looks different. Sustainability is now the path to prosperity.

One thing has remained the same over the past 52 years: the average global temperature has been steadily rising, the root of the climate crisis.

But now must be the turning point. This is the moment to change it all. Global leaders signed on to the Paris Agreement in 2015 with the aim of protecting our goal of limiting total global warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. The actions we take now, individually and collectively throughout organisations and every level of government, must reflect this aim.

Earth Day is a chance for everyone to show what we can do in our lives to protect the planet. Wherever we are, whatever we do, we can continue to make the best choices.

This year, the Earth Day theme is ‘Invest in Our Planet’. We’ve seen that smart, forward-planning companies are discovering that it is no longer a choice between going green and growing long-term profits. They are inextricably linked.

At Planet Mark we are inspired by our community of hundreds of businesses who have become the leaders of their industry. They are striving for continuous improvement in reducing their carbon emissions and lessening their impact on the planet. And they are also seeing the benefits that this can bring. From lowering operational costs to attracting and retaining talent who are now more likely to be seeking roles at purpose-driven organisations.

Collectively, organisations like these are helping to shape a brighter future for our planet and society. But this won’t happen until we all work together to invest in our planet. And businesses, regardless of size or sector, are at the heart of this transition.

This Earth Day we are calling on every organisation to do one thing: cut your carbon emissions so you can invest in both the planet and your business. Not only will you be saving money, but your people will also enjoy the challenge and you’ll be joining millions around the world who are tackling climate change.

We’ve seen a lot of change in the industry over the nine years since Planet Mark began. But now is the time for rapid and truly transformational change. The collective ambition towards net zero, accelerated by leaders around the world at COP26 in Glasgow last year, offers a glimpse into the future we could have.

Our new Planet Mark Net Zero Programme has been supporting businesses of all sizes, at all stages on their sustainability journey, to reach this ambition by setting and reaching net zero targets.  The programme is aligned to the SBTI Net-Zero Corporate Standard is consistent with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees, as set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement, and provides a robust and science-based understanding of net zero.

This six-stage programme incorporates our core principles of comprehensive carbon footprinting, annual certification, effective strategy setting and employee engagement to get businesses to net zero.

We build on these core principles to enable every organisation to set and deliver a credible net zero plan including target-setting, roadmap creation, carbon reduction initiatives, ongoing annual governance and offsetting as well as stakeholder engagement and communications.

Net zero is a game changer. It drives change and innovation and can radically cut energy and carbon. I hope you will make investing in net zero your Earth Day commitment.

This year, and every year, we are choosing to invest in our planet. We hope you will too.
