Certification story

The Barton Grange Group, a complex comprised of a national award winning garden centre, three large plant nurseries and the newly built Flower Bowl, has achieved Planet Mark Certification.

Barton Grange is committed to making business choices that are more environmentally friendly. In this crucial decade of action, measuring its own carbon footprint has been a critical step in reducing our impact on the planet and society.

Through Planet Mark, the company has protected an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth directly supports the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

It is also helping the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future. Barton Grange looks forward to sharing its sustainability achievements with the wider community.

Steve Malkin
CEO
Planet Mark
“I’m delighted that The Barton Grange Group has decided to commit to sustainable action. It is an exciting time for The Group. It has a variety of business ventures in which it can embed sustainable practice, and consumers will be pleased to find out about the commitments to fighting climate change. The Group has a complex path ahead, but one full of opportunity, and I commend the team for taking a responsible and forward-thinking approach to its carbon emissions.”

Certification story

The group has made a number of other sustainable pledges. It has also committed to spreading sustainability awareness throughout its network of stakeholders and employees. Barton Grange’s Flower Bowl has been built with sustainability in mind, including a green roof to help embed nature into the site.

The wide ranging environmental, health and social benefits to flora are well documented. But suppliers and nurseries must remain conscious of their supply chains to make sure they are sustainable and ethically sourced. Garden centres and nurseries have a responsibility to conduct business in a sustainable manner. From using sustainable materials to the safe and ethical disposal of chemicals, modern consumers regularly search for an ethical supply chain for their products. Garden centres should respond to this change in demand with their own rigorous and accountable approach to sustainability.

Future targets

Reduce carbon footprint by 5% annually

As part of the Planet Mark certification, The Barton Grange has committed to making a year-on-year reduction.
