Certification story

MSMR Architects, a leading residential architecture studio with an impressive track record of developing and maintaining long term relationships with the world’s leading developers, has achieved Planet Mark certification.

In June 2019, along with hundreds of architectural practices across the UK, MSMR signed up to Architects Declare, a commitment to an 11-point manifesto to, ‘strengthen our working practices to create architecture and urbanism that has a more positive impact on the world around us’.

MSMR believes that best practice comes from a continuous, creative and collaborative process, and that good design evolves through interrogation and refinement and sophisticated, well-crafted detailing. This whole-life approach helps inform the company’s approach to sustainability, as the team is able to engage their clients throughout the design process.

The buildings we live, work and rest in must change dramatically if we are to reach our global carbon targets. From emissions on construction sites to the way a building operates, holistic approaches to sustainable construction must be taken by everyone involved in the sustainable building process. Accurate measurement of emissions and engagement of the entire chain of stakeholders is vital to success, and this can only be achieved through clear and robust sustainability policies.

Steve Malkin
Founder and CEO
Planet Mark
“Well done MSMR Architects on taking a stand on climate change. The architecture industry has a tremendous opportunity to create positive change, both within its own studios, and in the buildings and spaces the industry creates. We must reimagine how we treat our building stock to reach the Paris Agreement Goals, and architects are central to this transition. I am proud that MSMR realises its role in creating positive change and has put its front foot forward in innovating towards a positive future.”

Going beyond

Through Planet Mark, the studio is protecting an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth goes directly towards supporting the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

It’s also helping the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future. MSMR Architects look forward to sharing its sustainability achievements with the wider community.

Future targets

Reduce carbon emissions by at least 2.5% each year

To recertify next year MSMR Architects must reduce emissions by 2.5%.

Aim to reduce carbon emissions by 5% each year

A 5% year-on-year reduction is the target reduction recommended by Planet Mark.
