Certification story

Roadchef Ltd, one of the UK’s leading Motorways Service Area Operators serving over 52 million visitors over 30 locations, has achieved Planet Mark certification. The company is committed to ensuring its business operates in a sustainable way, minimising environmental impacts and pioneering new and innovative ways of supporting this. 

Roadchef was the first motorway service area operator in the UK to introduce solar panels to most of its sites, providing green energy to power the business. This alone has reduced carbon emissions by 480 tonnes per year. All other electricity is also bought from green sources. The company is the proud recipient of the zero to landfill certification, which highlights that it reuses, recycles or safely disposes of all solid waste without the use of landfills. This was achieved through a number of initiatives, including collecting all waste coffee grounds at some sites and making use of composters to create compost that’s then used on company property.

Leveraging sustainable action can create a win-win for the planet and business. In a world of growing choice, retailers must begin to distinguish themselves in the minds of the conscious consumer. Strong, measurable and well-communicated sustainability achievements are a fantastic way to engage existing and potential customers, deepening brand loyalty and helping consumers make ethical purchasing decisions.

Going beyond

Through Planet Mark, the MSA operator is protecting an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth goes directly towards supporting the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

They are also helping the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future. Roadchef looks forward to sharing its sustainability achievements with the wider community.

Future targets

Reduce carbon emissions by at least 2.5% each year

To recertify next year Roadchef must reduce emissions by 2.5%.

Aim to reduce carbon emissions by 5% each year

A 5% year-on-year reduction is the target reduction recommended by Planet Mark.
