Certification story

Thakeham is a community creator committed to people, communities and creating amazing places to live. The company delivers distinctive residential developments and quality affordable homes across the South East.

Thakeham Group believes in sharing knowledge, being the agents for change and inspiring a way forward. Its 2020-2025 Sustainability Strategy is integrated throughout its operations and communications, giving clients and customers the chance of a new home that has a positive impact on communities and the environment, and a place that inspires a change in behaviour with sustainability at the heart.

As part of its wider sustainability strategy Thakeham is already tackling plastic pollution. The construction industry accounts for around 20% of the global demand for plastics, not including the plastic packaging around other materials. Planet Mark, Biffa and Thakeham collaborated to analyse the specific types of plastic being used on the site, their site to understand how it can use these plastics more efficiently; with the goal to kickstart a circular economy. In 2021 it published a Plastic Action Plan report detailing the company’s plastic action plan, featuring the circular economy and plastic pledge for its supply chain to join.

The company is furthering its sustainability commitment by becoming Planet Mark certified through measuring and reducing its carbon footprint. In this crucial Decade of Action, the company want to ensure that it is a force for good: positively transforming society and the planet by measuring our own impact on the environment.

This is Thakeham’s first year of business carbon footprint reporting. Over the next year, the group will be working towards reducing its carbon emissions and sharing its journey with its community to inspire others.

Through Planet Mark, Thakeham Group has protected an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth directly supports the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

It has also helped the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.

Thakeham has achieved Carbon Neutral status.
