Certification story

Total Office has achieved its first year of Planet Mark Business Certification and has therefore measured and reduced the carbon footprint of its business operations.

The provider of business supplies, services, and equipment across London, and the UK is taking a considered approach to sustainability. This Planet Mark member is focused on practical, tangible actions that can reduce its environmental footprint in the near-term, while planning for long-term growth in business operations, to mitigate against environmental damage for future generations.

Total Office considers the availability of reliable Scope 3 data from manufacturers, as well as the shipping of thousands of low-value items made in the far east, to be the sector’s biggest challenge but is committed to working with its supply chain, to put pressure on vendors.

One way in which Total Office is committed to reducing the impact of its operations on the planet is through the introduction of electric vehicles into its fleet portfolio. As part of its service offering, Total Office delivers supplies and equipment but is now taking the first step to using zero tailpipe emissions vehicles for operations with a key focus in London. It has developed a roadmap for replacing diesel vans with electric or petrol hybrids by 2025, transitioning to fully electric vehicles once the required charging infrastructure is sufficiently advanced within the areas of its operations, to accommodate this.

In addition, the business supplies provider is aiming to keep packaging materials out of landfill. Total Office offers its customers a tote delivery scheme to reduce the quantity of unnecessary packaging; warehouse staff remove unnecessary manufacturer packaging, store it in-house for reuse, or dispose of it responsibly through their waste management systems.

“We chose to be Planet Mark certified because they understand the challenges we face as a business in this new and complex area. Planet Mark Business Certification has helped us gain credibility by demonstrating that we’re taking meaningful steps to reduce our carbon footprint, setting goals, and becoming more adventurous with our carbon reduction targets which are reported annually.”

How has Planet Mark helped

Planet Mark Certification has helped put in place sustainability engagement for the team at Total Office. The management team is aware that education is an important springboard to help unlock the collective action and behaviour change required to support its ambitions. Through its ‘Totally Green’ quarterly publications, Total Office will clearly communicate its sustainable business highlights, both internally and externally to keep them accountable and on track.

The certification also helps Total Office to demonstrate its commitments and progress to its customers and its industry and contributes to being able to explore new business opportunities. Understanding travel costs and commuting time in actual terms has provided an incentive to conduct more meetings virtually. Power usage is also far more visible, which helps us make investment decisions to convert to lower consumption lighting and equipment.

Going beyond

Through the Planet Mark Business Certification, Total Office has protected an acre of biodiversity rich Peruvian rainforest thanks to their partnership with Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation and protect these valuable ecosystems. In addition, a donation has been made to support the Eden Project; an educational charity focused on building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.

In 2021, Planet Mark Business Certification helped Total Office contribute to 5 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): 6 Clean water and Sanitation, 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, 13 Climate Action, 15 Life on Land.
