Certification story

VolkerWessels UK, a multi-disciplinary civil engineering and construction group providing integrated engineering solutions, has achieved Planet Mark certification.

This is VolkerWessels UK’s 11th year of business carbon footprint reporting and Planet Mark certification. Achieving the Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.

Over the next year, the company will continue to work towards reducing its carbon emissions and sharing its journey with its community to inspire others. By being more strategic about its environmental responsibility, it will be able to significantly increase its positive impact and hope to encourage continual improvements within its community.

Steve Malkin
Founder and CEO
Planet Mark
“VolkerWessels UK has been on its own decade of climate action. A long-standing partner of Planet Mark, VolkerWessels UK has recorded another excellent year of results, slashing its carbon by nearly one sixth. The company is dedicated not only to reducing its own emissions, but to leading on sustainability in its industry. The team has a longstanding commitment to climate action, and it is a joy to work alongside them to achieve their goals.”

VolkerWessels UK is focused on limiting its negative impact on the living environment, or turning it into a positive impact. The company focuses its sustainability on three areas: health, the natural environment and work and social activities. This means that efforts to minimise CO2 emissions, reuse resources and use alternative materials are combined with health and wellbeing outcomes for its team and for the occupiers of the buildings it designs. VolkerWessels is committed to making the 2020s a Decade of Action by setting a flexible, agile and empowering structure for the organisation.

The built environment is a key battleground in the fight for a sustainable world. The sector is responsible for 34% of the UK’s carbon emissions and it is imperative that the sector begins to eliminate its emissions if we are to reach the ambition of the Paris Agreement. Low carbon construction is foreseeable, realistic and a potentially cost-effective means of combating climate change, and companies in the industry must begin to act for a low-carbon future.

Going beyond

Through Planet Mark, VolkerWessels UK has protected an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth directly supports the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

It has also helped the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.

Future targets

Reduce carbon emissions by at least 2.5% each year

To recertify next year VolkerWessels UK must reduce emissions by 2.5%.

Aim to reduce carbon emissions by 5% each year

A 5% year-on-year reduction is the target reduction recommended by Planet Mark.
