Certification story

Wheatley Housing Group, Scotland’s leading housing, care and property-management group, has achieved Planet Mark certification.

Wheatley Group was the first housing group in Scotland to achieve Planet Mark certification. Committed to playing its part in cutting carbon emissions and creating greener, more sustainable communities, Wheatley sees sustainability as part of a commitment to do the right thing by the planet – and by its customers’ pockets. Cutting the carbon of both its homes and operations, the housing group has worked across a number of sites to create warmer, drier and more energy efficient homes, by installing new windows, doors, and insulation and installing heat pumps. The housing group also makes efforts to add social value measures to its developments, ensuring care and duty for both the local and the global environment.

Steve Malkin
Founder and CEO
Planet Mark
“Wheatley Housing Group should be immensely proud of themselves. After making a landmark commitment last year, the housing association has continued in its leadership with dramatic carbon reductions. This new carbon efficiency will not only benefit the association, but all of its tenants, too. Congratulations to the team.”
Steven Devine
Director of Assets and Sustainability
Wheatley Group
“Wheatley is absolutely committed over the next five years to playing a leading role in Scotland – and in our own communities – to achieve climate commitments and reduce carbon footprint. Some of our steps include installing energy-efficient heating systems in multi-storey flats and fitting solar panels to help reduce energy bills and carbon emissions. Our ambitious sustainability plans will see Wheatley become carbon neutral by 2026. By working with Planet Mark we’ll be able to make positive changes in our communities, in the country and to the wider environment.”

Housing associations have a responsibility to rise to the challenges presented by climate change. Efficiencies in energy in the office and operational spaces can present savings that can be put into other areas of the business, but the knowledge of creating sustainable places can be transferred into the management of property and engagement with tenants. Our homes are major emitters of carbon, and inefficient homes not only use more energy but can exacerbate health and wellbeing problems within buildings. Thus, a proactive and robust sustainability strategy has both a direct impact on climate change, and also equips housing associations and owners with the tools to spread sustainability among its network.

Future targets
