Certification story

Now in their fifth year of Planet Mark certification, Winch Design, is dedicated to progressing the sustainable mission within the bespoke design sector. Life Worth Living is Winch Design’s plan to care for people and the planet. From their work with charities to the many ways they are embedding sustainability into their DNA.

Small changes in the office such as banning plastic bottles and replacing paper towels with hand dryers all add up to play their part in the much bigger picture.

As an organisation they are passionate about challenging themselves to research, improve and innovate when it comes to sustainability.

Sustainability is becoming centre stage across the luxury design industry and whilst they acknowledge there is a long way to go, Winch Design are working hard to become more knowledgeable about sustainable solutions. Whether that’s through proposing alternative or regenerative materials, working with local artisans and suppliers or supporting the shipyards to develop hybrid engines.

Steve Malkin
Founder and CEO
Planet Mark
“We are delighted to recertify Winch Design for a fifth consecutive year. Through their relationship building across the industry and supply chain, Winch Design continues to inspire and inform their design work with sustainable solutions. Their commitment to reducing carbon emissions and minimising their environmental impacts will inspire others in their sector, and beyond, to join them.”
Alex Parkinson
Sustainability Specialist
Winch Design
“Planet Mark enables us to positively contribute and engage in understanding our output and responsibilities as designers. The certification aligns perfectly with our passion to create a more conscious luxury within design. I have recently been appointed as the Sustainability Specialist at Winch, and I am excited about finding the best alternative materials to use within our projects and sharing my knowledge with the industry. I hope we can continue this relationship with Planet Mark and work towards our goals of reducing our carbon footprint.”

How has Planet Mark helped?

Having the opportunity to work with Planet Mark over the years, has allowed Winch Design to analyse their output and therefore question how they operate as a business daily. Being on this journey has put the conversation at the forefront of their day to day and motivates them to improve year on year.

Measuring their carbon footprint with Planet Mark has been essential in helping reduce consumption. It has been crucial to discover the key areas, and then work hard to reduce these through actions such as switching to greener energy suppliers. Not only does this have a great benefit to their carbon footprint, but also has resulted in cutting costs.

By collaborating with Planet Mark, Winch Design have seen that it shows their clients and team that they are passionate about sustainability and take responsibility for their output, setting them apart in their industry and paving the way for a more conscious luxury within design.

Going beyond

In 2021 Winch Design launched their first sustainable interior yacht concepts which they are in the process of being verified by the Water Revolution Foundation and this was a huge step forward.

Winch Design’s CEO, Aino Grapin, also chairs the Sustainable Yacht Design Taskforce that was launched by The Water Revolution Foundation during Monaco Yacht Show in 2021. Relationships such as these are essential to create a more mindful and greener industry for the future.

Future targets

Reduce carbon emissions by at least 2.5% each year

To recertify next year Winch Design must reduce emissions by 2.5%.

Aim to reduce carbon emissions by 5% each year

A 5% year-on-year reduction is the target reduction recommended by Planet Mark.
